Werrington are champions of the Huntingdonshire Indoor Cricket League for the first time in their history after a crushing 134 run win against Wansford. Werrington knew that they had to win and there was nothing that nearest challengers Ak11 could do, but they arrived at the Bushfield Sports Centre to find that AK11 had gone top without playing as opponents Burghley Park had conceded their match. This meant that the equation was simple, they had to win to become champions and they did that in the most emphatic way with two players scoring half centuries and recording the highest score of the season. Batting first opening batsman Mateeh Ur Rehman and captain Muhammad Toseeq both retired under ECB rules with 25 each, before Mudassar Shafiq and Saad Ashraf did the same. Both Ur Rehman and Toseeq returned with more brutal batting and then retired again finishing unbeaten respectively on 52 and 50 each. There was plenty of boundary hitting for Werrington with 7 fours and 17 sixes brutally hit with captain Toseeq contributing 6 sixes. Werrington’s imposing 205-2 from 10 overs was not only the highest team total of the season and one of the highest scores recorded in the league’s long history, but still a long way behind the record of 300 that was scored by Kashmir over a decade ago. Beds and Hunts Ladies Opening Bowler Chloe Sainsbury was one of the Wansford bowlers to take one of the two Werrington wickets.
Chasing 206 to stop history being made, Werrington were just as clinical in the field as they had been with the bat. Only Mark Cadman (22) and Sainsbury (18) scored runs of note, with wickets being shared around along with 3 direct hit run outs and Captain Toseeq in the thick of the action with two direct hits. Both Werrington and AK11 finished the season with 6 wins and 18 points, but Werrington are crowned champions after winning the head-to-head match between the two teams earlier in the season. Werrington celebrated long into the night and will now go and represent Huntingdonshire in the ECB National Indoor Competition in February 2027. Last years winners AK11 will represent Huntingdonshire in the 2026 ECB competition which starts in early February. Huntingdonshire are one of a few counties in the UK to be handed a bye in their County Final, so they progress to Regional Finals Day on Sunday 8th March at Uppingham School. They will be playing crack Indoor team Cherry Willingham from Lincolnshire who have won the Lincoln Indoor League 11 times in the last 13 years. However, Cherry Willingham won’t be winning the Lincoln Indoor League this season after being out of contention with 2 matches remaining. If AK11 beat Cherry Willingham they will play the other regional semi-final winners from Bedfordshire or Norfolk for a place at the Lords Indoor School for National Finals Day on Sunday 29th March 2026.
Pak Azad jumped ahead of Ufford Park to finish the season in 3rd with a narrow 17 run win against Bretton. For the second week running Pak Azad lost a wicket from the first ball of the match this time seeing opener Adnan Latif brilliantly caught and bowled by Neil Buckingham. Two more quick wickets followed to leave Pak Azad in a right pickle, but fortunately the innings was restored with cool heads from Fardin Satari (36) and Haroon Bashir (30) taking them to 116 all out from the last ball of the 10th over. The Bretton innings started brightly with Neil Buckingham quickly retiring with 25. However, there was some brilliant bowling from Pak Azad with 31 dot balls delivered by the Pak Azad bowlers. Medium pacer Abdul Waris and spinner Fardin Satari each picked up a wicket and a direct run out and despite scores in their twenties from Mark Buckingham (23) and Mark Drake (22) Bretton were to fall short.
Ufford Park dropped to 4th in the table after losing their 3rd match in the last 4. Ufford started the season well with 3 straight wins against Pak Azad, Bretton and Burghley Park, but have suffered from the winter blues losing this time by 22 runs to Hampton. Quick fire scoring from Javad Ghani (three fours and two sixes) in his 44 and Ali Shehzad (1 four and 4 sixes) in his 39 saw Hampton score 143 all out. Ufford’s ground fielding was good with 4 different fieldsman executing run outs. Over the past few matches Ufford have been renowned for England style batting collapses and they didn’t disappoint again. Andy Larkin (22) got the Ufford innings off to a flyer, but 22-0 very quickly became 31-3 with Hampton seamer Ali Ghazanfar (2-13) taking two wickets in the same over. Saj Ali (37) and Jonathan Bigham (28 not out) tried to rebuild the innings, but they could not get the team over the line losing by 22 runs.
