Werrington have one hand on the Hunts Indoor League title after cruising to a 73 run win against Hampton in the latest round of matches. Werrington have been in the league for most of the last 35 years of competition and just need to beat Wansford this weekend to become champions for the first time ever. Werrington’s score of 137-5 was built around consistent contributions from most of their batsmen. After promising starts from players it was led to lower order men Mudassar Shafiq (33), Naveed Ahmed 29 not out and 26 from Captain Muhammad Toseeq to post a competitive total. All the Hampton bowlers were tight with standout performances from Jawad Ali (2-29) and Usman Ghani (2-33). The Hampton innings never got going with only 3 players reaching double figures and Javad Ghani top scoring with 16 as 4 Hampton players were run out (with 2 executed by Toseeq) to see Werrington win and be 1 match away from creating history.
Defending champions AK11 kept up the pressure on Werrington with a 47 run win over Bretton. In Indoor Cricket you must retire at 25 and then come back in later. Opener Zaheer Abbas retired twice finishing unbeaten on 55. Wicket Keeper batsman Abrar Ahmed also continued his fine form with two sixes and two fours in his 39. A late cameo from Sudheer Jafeer (22) helped Ak post an intimidating total. Despite scores in the twenties for Bretton Captain Andy Bennett, Luke Marriott and Tom Sanderson, wickets fell at regular intervals with Jafeer taking a wicket and completing two run outs.
Both AK11 and Werrington sit on 15 points (5 wins) from their matches, but Werrington are top after beating AK earlier in the Winter. Ak11 play Burghley Park this weekend.
Twice winners Ufford Park were involved in the first match of 2026 and after two straight defeats leading up to Christmas, they were back to winning ways after overcoming Wansford by 4 wickets. Wansford started the year with a bang with both openers Andy Briault and Kester Sainsbury retiring. However, the turning point was the introduction of Usman Sadiq and Andy Larkin who changed the game in the direction of Ufford. Seamer Sadiq took 2-15 and Larkin 2-19 helped by an outstanding one-handed catch and smart stumping by wicket keeper Jonathan Bigham pegged Wansford back. Sadiq and Bigham combined for another run out with Larkin dismissing the last man with a direct hit. Sainsbury (43), Briault (26) and Mark Cadman (19) top scored for Wansford in their 119.
Ufford reached their target with 9 balls remaining with Sadiq (28), Ufford Captain Dan Peeroo (25) both retiring followed by a quickfire unbeaten 23 from Saj Ali seeing them home.
Pak Azad also started the new year with a narrow 15 run success against Burghley Park. Pak Azad had the worst possible start seeing opener Bash Hussain run out by David Popple without facing from the first ball of the innings. 0-1 quickly became 16-2 but luckily for them a recovery was led by Abdul Waris, Haroon Bashir and Shak Hussain. All players retired and came back in to bat again with Waris whacking boundaries for fun with 4 sixes and 1 four in his unbeaten 36 and Bashir and Hussain also contributing well with 34 and 33 respectively.
Burghley also had 3 batsmen retire with James Biggs (30), Matt Davies (26), Alex Ashwin (25) never being dismissed and a quickfire 22 from David Popple getting them close to victory. However, Waris was well and truly in the thick of the action with two direct run outs. However, the reason that Burghley fell short was due to the outstanding bowling of Pak Azad opening bowler Bash Hussain who bowled 9 dot balls and only had 3 scoring shots from his two overs returning incredibly tight figures conceding 7 runs from his 2 overs.
The ECB have recently made the draw for the ECB National Indoor Competition for 2026. AK11 are the Hunts representative after winning the Hunts Indoor League last season. The Indoor County Final is on Sunday 22nd February, but Hunts are one of just a few counties to receive a bye, so will head to Regional Indoor Finals Day at Uppingham School on Sunday 8th March 2026.
2.30pm – Winners of Bedfordshire v Winners of Worcestershire
4.00pm – Cherry Willingham (Winners of Lincolnshire) v AK11 (Winners of Huntingdonshire)
5.45pm - Both winners play against each other in the Regional Final.
The winning team then heads to Lords for the National Indoors Final on Sunday 29th March 2026.
Same format as we play, except it is 12 overs a side (not 10) and 3 overs max a bowler (not 2) so you can get away with just 4 bowlers bowling. We all wish AK11 representing the county all the best as they are just two wins away from a Lords appearance.
