Ufford Park and AK11 are the two teams tied at the top after week 2 of the Hunts Indoor League, but it is AK11 who are top after they have taken more opposition wickets from their first two matches of the season. The current champions AK and the 2023/2024 champions Ufford Park have had a great start to the season and continued that again with convincing wins in the latest round of matches.
AK stay top with a convincing 85 run win over Wansford with strong batting from their top order. Openers Sudheer Jafeer (42) and Abrar Ahmed (40) led the way, and they received good support from indoor debutant Zeeshan Ul Haq Makhdoom (unbeaten with 27) and Sufyan Mazhar (26). Nick Bradbury (2-15) was the pick of the Wansford bowlers who also gave an indoor debut to Rudra Valambhia who is the first youngster from the Lords Taverners funded Peterborough Wicketz project to play in the Hunts Indoor League.
Ufford Park’s 100% record continued after a 41-run win over 10 times Hunts indoor League Champions Bretton. Opening batsman Waheed Javed yet again led from the front and for the second week running he raised his bat this time with 51 not out. He received good support from Saj Ali (32), Usman Sadiq (28) and Jonathan Bigham (19) as Ufford scored 151-3. All-rounder Neil Buckingham took a wicket and two excellent catches, while seamer Chris Sanderson played his first match for a decade returning good figures and taking a wicket.
In reply, Bretton closed out on 110-5 due to some tight excellent bowling and catching with all players getting in on the act. Buckingham was in the thick of the action again and the opener top scored unbeaten with 36.
Burghley Park have entered the Hunts Indoor League for the first time in their history and after a defeat in their first match they are off the mark at the second attempt with a 4 wicket win against Hampton. Jawad Ali (27), Javad Ghani (25) and Ali Ghazanfar (23) were the men in form for Hampton in making 122-2, but two quickfire scores of 25 from James Biggs and Pete Hewitt saw Burghley home by 4 wickets with 7 balls remaining.
Chaotic running and brilliant fielding was in action in the Werrington v Pak Azad, with Werrington seeing 5 of their team run out. Shehzad Akhter (28) and Saad Ashraf (18) had started well for Werrington but some brilliant fielding from square leg fielder Ali Zeb (who was involved in two of the dismissals) and some confusion from the Werrington batters saw their innings falter and collapse to 79 all out with 14 balls remaining. Pak Azad started well with opener Abdul Waris hitting 19, but wickets tumbled quickly, and a cool composed Haroon Bashir saw Pak Azad home with an unbeaten 39.
