Cricket East is fully committed to developing cricket opportunities across Bedfordshire and Huntingdonshire for people with disability.
As part of that commitment, Cricket East has developed many working partnerships with a number of stakeholders to enable this to happen. Working with local authorities, schools, SEN schools, the NHS and mental health organisations as well as cricketing partners such as the England & Wales Cricket Board, the Lord's Taverners and the Cricket Foundation, Cricket East has positioned itself in a strong place to be able to develop, create and deliver cricket opportunities to a great number of people.
Although the strategy is to create cricket playing opportunities for people with disability, a number of other potentially more important outcomes have been experienced as a result of our sessions. Areas such as health and wellbeing and the social impact that the sessions have delivered have been outstanding.
We are in a position to be able to demonstrate some real gains with the groups we have been working with that have impacted in other areas of the service users lives.
We are all aware of a number of by-products that sport brings to all, such as the health benefits, but on the social impact side, we have witnessed individuals whose individual ‘life skills’ have been enhanced such as decision making, working in teams and using one’s own initiative. These skills should not be under-estimated.
As our work and our learning continue to grow, our commitment to working with people with disabilities just gets stronger and stronger, to the point where ‘disability cricket’ has become one of the core areas of Cricket East’s work.
If any individuals or organisations are interested in cricket opportunities for the disabled, please contact the Cricket East Office on 07880 636482.
