Newborough v Sheikh
Newborough created history by winning the Killingworth Cup Final for the first time in their history. The Final was played Thursday night at Orton Park and a large and noisy crowd saw Newborough victorious by 14 runs.
Newborough won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first. They were soon into their stride with opener David Cooper retiring with 38 from just 10 deliveries. (In midweek all players have to retire at 35 or when their last scoring shot takes them past 35. They are allowed back in when everyone has been dismissed). Youngster George Woods with 31 carried on the quick firing scoring before a brutal unbeaten 35 from Robbie Trickett took Newborough to 174-6 from their 20 overs.
Sheikh also started in brutal fashion with Hamza Jarral retiring with 38. He received excellent support from Ali Haider (29) and Bashahrat Ali (20) before an unbeaten 31 from Usman Farooq got Sheikh close to victory. Unfortunately for them, Matt Cawley was very tight and bowled a good line and length taking 3-23 from his 4 overs. This bowling performance in the middle overs pinned Sheikh back and was the main reason that saw Newborough create history and win the Killingworth Cup for the first time.
